It started with a few hives.
Beecroft Honey House began not as a commercial venture, but as a family passion project — a handful of hives tucked into the backyard, a lot of curiosity, and a rapidly growing appreciation for the profound intelligence of the colony. We quickly learned that a single jar of honey is a miracle of collective effort, representing millions of flights and a deep connection to the local landscape.

Then it grew to fourteen.
Before long, our fascination multiplied. By the time we reached five hives, our little backyard apiary had outgrown its residential surroundings. With the safety of our neighbours and the wellbeing of our bees in mind, we relocated our colonies to Chipping Norton, where they had more room to thrive.
And thrive they did. Our apiary eventually expanded to fourteen flourishing hives. A beautiful rhythm took over our lives, dictated entirely by the seasons, the flowering of local eucalyptus, and the timing of the harvests. Sticky frames were brought into the kitchen, the sweet aroma of fresh wax filled the air, and neighbours began knocking on our door, suddenly very interested in what our bees were creating. We weren't just keeping bees; we were anchoring ourselves to the heartbeat of our community.
Varroa arrived.
Then came the summer the industry dreaded. The arrival of the Varroa mite swept through like a silent ghost, striking a devastating blow to our yard. We watched helplessly as ten of our cherished colonies collapsed. Walking out to silent hives that were once buzzing with life was heartbreaking; it felt like losing a piece of our family. Only four hives survived. It was a dark, heavy season of grief and doubt, but bees possess a remarkable, ancient wisdom — they are hardwired to get on with the business of living. And as beekeepers, we realised we had to do the same.
Four hives, and rebuilding.
Those four resilient colonies became our foundation. Even as our numbers were down, the demand for Beecroft Honey House from our loyal community only grew — their support became the wind beneath our wings. We began rebuilding our apiary with a new, fierce dedication, tending to each surviving queen and her brood with meticulous care. Today, we are steadily growing our hive numbers once more, but we no longer rush the process. We wait patiently for each season to dictate what can be shared, letting the bees lead the way. We have come back stronger, wiser, and deeply grateful for the sweetness that follows the storm.
With love and a little buzz,
The Beecrofts
Tended by hand, one frame at a time.
Our story is the record of a working family apiary: its hives, its difficult seasons and the careful work of rebuilding.
